The November Junior Player Update

It’s hard to believe it’s been a month since me last update on local junior tournament players but here we are again.

Max Benson played the Boys 12 and Under National Open in Tuscon, Arizona and Jack Pulliam of Manhattan Beach, California seemed to have his number.  Max drew Jack in the first round and lost 6-4, 1-6, 10-3.  In the backdraw, Max lost to the #5 seed Sebastian Herrera of El Paso by a score of 7-5, 6-0. Pulliam is still alive in thetournament and is in the quarter finals of the backdraw.  In the doubles, Max teamed with Christopher Maltby of Glen Ellyn,Illinois for an 8-4 win over 4th seeded Justin Bloss (also of El Paso) and Harsh Parikh (of Tuscon) before losing to Pulliam and partner Evan Shamlian of Los Angeles.  Pulliam and Shamlian are in the finals due to a withdrawal of 2nd seeded team of Daniel Mateescu and Mark Wu.  Max is currently ranked #524 in the country in the 12′s while Pulliam is ranked #239.

Niskayuna’s Nisha Detchprohm played the Mountain Lakes Championships last weekend and started out with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lauren Hassell.  In the Quarter Finals, Nisha (the sixth seed) lost to Adrianne Alfonso (the fourth seed) by a score of 6-1, 6-2.  In this weekend’s tournament at Mendham, Nisha started off with a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Alexandra Mircea.  Then it was a 6-3, 6-2 upset over the third seeded Emily Krupnick.  It ended up with a Quarter Final loss to third seeded Ekim Buyuk (6-2, 6-2).

Michael Haelen has been active on the tournament scene this autumn.  He kept up the busy schedule in November.  First there was a Level 1 Tournament at Alley Pond at the end of October, but Michael was unable to play that and had to take a loss by default.  He returned to Alley Pond the week after for a Sectional Championships but lost in the first round of Qualifiers to Alex Grossman 6-2, 6-0.  The next weekend Michael travelled to Chestnut Ridge where he was the top seed in a level 2 tournament.  He started out with a win by default over Nicholas Aldrich.  He followed that up with wins over Zachary Schoenfeld (6-2, 1-0,  ret) and Will Marvin 6-4, 6-3.  In the finals, Michael defaulted to #2 seed Austin Li.    The next week Michael traveled to Mount Olive, NJ for a Level 1 tournament.  Pranav Krishnan beat Michael 6-1, 6-2. Twin brothers Ian and Alex Van Cott played the Sectional Champiosnhips at Sound Shore earlier this month where Alex was the top seed and Ian was seeded 5th.  Ian started out with a 6-1, 6-1 first round victory over Aidan McNulty.  Alex had a much tougher time with his first round opponent, but prevailed in the end 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 over Vihar Shah.  In the second round, Ian lost to Thomas Caputo 6-4, 6-4 while Alex continued on with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 win over Gene Tioutine.  In the third round, Alex also lost to Caputo - 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.  In the backdraw, Matt Nardella got a walkover win over Alex due to illness and Daniel Morgan had a 4-3 retired (injury) win over Ian.
