This article is a little different from the other age group recaps I did. I am starting with the Northern Region kids in the Boys 18′s. First off – the Van Cott’s. Alex was #2 in the Eastern Section, Ian was #9. With 1869 points, Alex was 200 points behind the #1 player. Ian was about 200 points behind the #4 player. Alex finished out the year with an 83-50 record overall in singles and doubles. That includes Sectional events, Regional events and National events. The Van Cott’s are going to be part of the Green Wave of Tulane University next year. Read about it HERE. The next highest ranked player in the Northern Region is Jake Crawford. Jake is ranked 49th in the Section and he will be playing his college tennis at University of Chicago next year as an Economics major. The University of Chicago Department of Economics has fielded more Nobel Prize laureates and John Bates Clark medalists in economics than any other university. Albany Academy’s Stefan Kuhar is ranked 56th in the Eastern Section. Stefan has not yet signed a National Letter of Intent for college tennis. Rob Schmitz is ranked 108th in the Section. Rob has made a verbal commitment to play for the St. Lawrence Saints. Chris Frost is the next highest ranked local player but Chris is already in college and playing for Middlebury College so he is no longer playing junior tournaments. Winston Lin of Wiliamsville, NY sits at the top of the Boys 18 and under rankings. Having coached Winston at zonals I can say that not only is a very good player but he is a very good sportsman. Winston plays #2 for Columbia University as a Freshman. Joining Winston at Columbia is Bert Vancura – ranked #5 in the 18 and unders. Bert plays #5 for the Lions. Quentin Monaghan of Chatham, NJ is #3 in the 18′s. Quentin has made a verbal commitment to play his college tennis at Notre Dame. #4 is Thomas Caputo of Livingston, NJ who will be playing for the Michigan State Wolverines. Austin Siegel of Tarrytown, NY is close behind at #6. Austin plays at the Bill Adams International Tennis Academy (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and will joining the Louisville Cardinals Men’s Tennis Team in the fall.

The top ranked player in the Girls 18′s from the Northern Region is Cathryn (Cat) Crummey of Shaker. No surprises there. Cat is a 3 time Sectional Champion who finished 4th at states. Cat is ranked 52nd in the Girls 18 and unders. She probably would be ranked quite a bit higher if she played as many tournaments as the other top players but Cat also does competitive diving at Schuyler Meadows. The next Northern Regional player in the Girls 18′s is Julia Guignard of Lowville at #72. Emily Laurilliard of Niskayuna (Sr.) is #117. The rest of the Northern Region Players are:

Tops in the Section in the Girls 18′s is Jamie Loeb (Junior) Jamie has played many tournaments in our area and before that her sister Jenna played here. Jamie recently won the 18 and Under Winter Nationals. Far behind her is Amanda Muliawan, another player who has played frequently in our area. Amanda will be playing tennis at Princeton in the fall. Louisa Chirico is #3 in the rankings. Louisa is only a Sophomore so she has several years of junior tennis ahead of her. Lexi Borr comes in at #4. Lexi is a Junior out of Westfield, NJ. Nationally Jamie is 8th, Amanda is 62nd, Louisa is 88th and Lexi is 118th. There are several other Eastern players ranked in the top 100 Nationally that don’t show up on the Eastern Sectional Rankings. The main reason these players are not ranked high in the Eastern Section is because they are focusing on National events rather than playing Eastern Sectional events. These players are: Julia Elbalba of Oyster Bay – 35th; Katrine Steffenson of Scarsdale – 37th; Emily Safron of New York City – 56th; Tina Jiang of Bridgewater, NJ – 63rd; Hannah Camhi of Woodbury 78th; Leighann Sahagan of Queens Village is 89th.
