This past Tuesdays “Cermak’s Schenecatdy” featured an article about Bobby Dick & the Sundowners. Bobby Dick and Susan Dick are long time members of both the indoor club and the Glens Falls Tennis & Swim Club. The article, from Tuesday’s Times Union is reprinted below.
Bobby Dick and the Sundowners are a musical group that after 47 years is still going strong. They mainly work Glens Falls-Lake George-Saratoga Springs, but over time they’ve played all over hell’s half-acre.
Way back in ’65, they opened for the Rolling Stones at Albany’s Palace Theater and also long ago they played regularly at Schenectady’s former Lorenzo’s Lounge. The Sundowners toured with Jimi Hendrix and the Monkees. They worked the Hollywood Bowl with Tina Turner and the Righteous Brothers.
On occasion I’ve written an item about the Sundowners, probably the Capital Region’s longest tenured, high-profile musical group. After just catching up with Dick, I learned the Sundowners recently played a wedding reception at Fenway Park’s EMC Club.
The club is located midlevel behind home plate. “There are big picture windows facing the Green Monster and the rest of the field — quite a thrill for us,” Dick said.
He came up with the unusual booking because the Sundowners play the Killington circuit where he met Marc Deschenes and his wife to be. Deschenes, a former 12-year minor league pitcher, owns a baseball academy in greater Boston.
“When we play proms, I find myself older than the students’ parents and even older than the superintendents,” said Dick, who really is ageless.
