The tents were out for todays Girls High School Tennis Sectionals at Central Park Schenectady. It was a chilly day but the atmosphere was hot. Team spirit was in evidence everywhere with many tents decorated in school colors and many players sporting face tattoos with their school colors. Grace Franze, the events previous coordinator told me “I thought the tournament went quite well.”
In singles, top seed Jessica Macaluso of Shen will play Kirsten Ackerman of Guilderland. Anna Dyakiv of Amsterdam, the #2 seed plays Cat Crummey of Shaker. Amanda Rosati – #4 seed- plays Teru Greene and Molly O’Connor – also of Shaker – plays Claire Schmitz who is the #3 seed.
Top seed Sara Bjork and Rebecca Mangona of Saratoga play Ali Coyle and Catherene Jenkins of Shaker in the doubles. I talked to Sara about being top seed, she replied “It was awesome, we weren’t expecting it.” Second seed Sarah Rubin and Alexa Grossman of Bethlehem play Meghan Patenaude and Karen Sweeney of Shen. Sisters Shibani & Mitali Das of Emma Willard are the #3 seeds – they play Nicole Kellogg and Nicole Himpele of Burnt Hills. Guilderland’s Rachel Gallel and Lauren Fehervani play Rachel VanCavage & Meghan Flain of Shen.
Play continues with the quarter finals tommorow at 2:00 @ Central Park. For both the singles and the doubles, the two finalists go to states along with the winner of the 3rd/4th place playoff.
