Jon Clair Added to Men’s Tennis Staff

TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) director of athletics Jim Knowlton has announced the hiring of Jon Clair an assistant coach for the Engineers men’s tennis team. A former student-athlete at the University of Mary Washington, he will aide second-year head coach Jon Satkowski.

A native of Slingerlands, N.Y., Clair spent the last two years as a tennis professional at nearby Tri-City Fitness and Tennis. During his tenure, he has helped plan lessons and run clinics for both adults and junior players.

As a player, Clair was a four-time All-Conference First Team selection for the Eagles, ranking as high as 15th-regionally during his senior season with victories against four nationally-ranked players. Other highlights of his career included a singles semi-final appearance at the 2005 ITA Regional Tournament.

When he graduated, Clair ranked second in program history in single season singles victories and third in all-time career singles wins.

Additionally, he was a key member of a squad which qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament each of his four years, including Final Eight appearances in 2003, 2004 & 2005. The team also won four straight Capital Athletic Conference Championships and was ranked 13th or better nationally throughout his career.

Clair graduated from the University of Mary Washington in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies.

Men’s Tennis Tops Springfield, 8-1

TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Brandon Mazzara won at second singles and paired up with sophomore Jarrett Regier for a first doubles victories to lead the Rensselaer men’s tennis team to an, 8-1, victory over Springfield College in its home opener at Sharp Courts. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Pride drop to 0-2.

Mazzara (Orange, CA/Villa Park) captured his fourth second singles victories in as many matches as Rensselaer won all six individual match-ups with the Pride. Regier (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) also so his personal success continue, taking first flight singles (6-1, 6-1) over Springfield’s Ben Burnap (Westerly, RI/Westerly).

The Engineers are back in action next Saturday and Sunday, when they take part in the MSMC Flighted Tournament in Newburgh, N.Y. Play kicks off Saturday at 9am and continues through the weekend.

Women’s Tennis Rolls Past Plattsburgh State

in Season Opener

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s tennis team opened its 2011-12 season in fine fashion on Sunday, defeating SUNY Plattsburgh, 8-1 at Memorial Hall Tennis Courts.  The Engineers, who swept all three doubles and won five of six singles, is 1-0, while the Cardinals drop to 3-4 overall.

RPI was powered by the clean sweep at doubles as all three teams had solid victories.  Leading the way was the first flight team of senior Zosia Casterline (Farmington, MI/Farmington) and rookie Casey Olsen (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge), who pulled off an 8-5 win.  Olsen also went on to win at third flight singles by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.

Liberty League Tabs Three from Tennis

TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in men’s and women’s tennis and three Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been recognized. Jarrett Regier and Brandon Mazzara were named Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively, in men’s tennis, while Casey Olsen earned Rookie of the Week from the women’s team.

A sophomore from East Amherst, N.Y., Regier improved to 3-0 and 4-0 in singles and doubles, respectively this season as RPI defeated Springfield, 8-1 last week. He won 6-1, 6-1 at first singles and paired with Mazzara for an easy 8-1 win at first doubles.

Regier, who was a five-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week last season, posted a 13-1 overall record at first flight singles. Pairing with current captain Patrick Russo, he went 10-4 at first doubles in 2010-11, earning All-Liberty League Singles honors. A former standout at Clarence High School, he was also named Liberty League Rookie of the Year.

A freshman out of Orange, Calif., Mazzara continued to dominate last week, capturing a pair of wins in RPI’s 8-1 win over the Pride. He won a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3 (6) match at second singles to improve to 4-0 and paired with Regier for a 8-1 win at first doubles to move to 4-0 on the year.

Mazzara helped Villa Park High School to four straight Century League Championship titles, while being named his named his team’s Rookie of the Year. In his senior season, he competed at first singles, garnering team Most Valuable Player honors.

Olsen, a freshman from Glen Ridge, N.J., had a solid start to her collegiate career, posting a pair of victories in RPI’s season-opening 8-1 win at Plattsburgh. She came away with an 8-5 win at first doubles and then won 6-2, 6-3 at third singles.

A three-year member of the Glen Ridge High School tennis team, Olsen was an All-Group Second selection at first singles, while being named to the All-Essex County Second Team. As a junior, the squad took home the 2009 Group 1 State Championship.

The men’s tennis team is back on the courts this weekend as it participates in the Mount Saint Mary College Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Action begins at 9am on both days. The women’s squad is also in action this weekend at the ITA Northeast Regionals, hosted by William Smith. The tournament begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
