Tennis’ Brooks & Iannone Reach Consolation Doubles Final at Eastern Collegiate Invitational


West Point, N.Y.- UAlbany’s Aubrey Brooks and Sarah Iannone advanced to the Eastern Collegiate Invitational’s consolation doubles final on Sept. 23-24.  The tournament was held at Army on the Malek Courts.
Brooks and Iannone  won their first-round Doubles B Flight match over Quinnipiac‘s Morgan Crystal and Morgan Massey, but lost in the quarterfinals match, 9-8 (7-6), to Connectciut’s number one ranked duo of Julia Allen and Lucy Nutting. UAlbany’s doubles grouping went on to win its quarterfinal match in the consolation bracket, 8-5, over Rhode Island’s Karolina Wojciak.  The Great Danes proceeded to the finals after Hofstra‘s team of Malissa Galanchi and Sonia Tsay defaulted. Ultimately, Brooks and Iannone lost in the finals to Pittburgh’s squad of Kimmy Borza and Amanda Wickman, 8-0.
In the Doubles A Flight, freshmen Cheryl Kukkonen and Kirsten Scott lost their opening-round match to Fordham’s Sarah Ali and Bella Genkina, 8-4. The duo went on to the finals in the consolation bracket, but fell to Seton Hall‘s Karina Martinez-Cordero and Caitlin Foley, 8-4.
In the Singles D Flight, sophomore Rachel Drake fell to Bryant’s May Vickers in the first round in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
The Great Danes continue their fall season in their first dual match vs. Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 1:00 p.m. in Teaneck, N.J.
