Kacie Weatherhead’s win at #2 singles was not enough for the York College Spartans. Kacie defeated Catholic University‘s Ritmarie Holden 6-0, 6-4 but the team lost a tough 5-4 decision to Catholic University. In doubles, Caitlin Porter & Elena Sceusa defeated Kacie and teammate Megan McCullin 8-4. Kacie’s Guilderland teamate Kirsten Ackerman headed off to Marist College. So far the Red Foxes have competed in two tournaments. Kirsten was winless at the Stony Brook Invitational, playing in the Flight C Bracket (there were 3 flights with A being the highest). In the Eastern Collegiate Tournament, Kirsten lost both of her matches in the Flight B Doubles. We will have more news of these local players as the year progresses.
In the William Smith Invitational, two local players played each other in the first round of the “B” Flight. Christine Cary of Nazareth got the win over RIT’s Sara Bjork 8-3. Christine then lost to Casey Nicoletti of host Willaim Smith College 8-2. In the same tournament Geneseo State’s Amanda Rosati took Kate O’Connor of William Smith by an 8-2 margin in the first round of Flight C. Terumi Greene of William Smith beat RIT’s Lindsey Gibson 8-0. In the quarter finals both Amanda and Terumi continued their winning ways with over Suzanne Weinstein of St. Lawrence (8-2) and Rochester’s Cara Genbauffe (8-2) respectively. Amanda beat Sara Shields of Geneseo 8-5 in the semi finals, while Terumi lost to Julia Passik of Geneseo 8-5. In the finals, Passik beat Rosati 8-6. In the consolation rounds Sara Bjork lost to Katie Talbot – Geneseo (9-7). In the “A” Flight, Alex Goodman took out Kiara Ocasio (William Smith) 8-5. Alex plays for Rochester. Elkie Vandenbeemt of St. Lawrence beat Alex 8-4 in the next round. In the A Doubles, Alex paired with Danielle Shreck to beat Christine Cary and Cara Yinger of Nazareth 8-0. Then a 9-7 victory over Becky Guzzo and Allison Young of Ithaca College. They finally lost to Shanuki Tilekeratne and Frances Tseng of Rochester in the semi finals 8-6. Terumi Green and Haley Wolf beat Cindy Zu and Rachel Suresky of Rochester 8-3 in the opening round of the B Flight Doubles. They lost to Olivia Arroyo and Suzanne Weinstein of St. Lawrence in the quarter finals 9-8 (5). The same pair had taken out Sara Bjork and Lindsey Gibson in the first round by a score of 8-6. Cary and Yinger beat Minxuan Yuan and Luren Johnson of geneseo in the A flight consolation round by a score of 8-3, but then lost to Shannon Murphy and Anna Young of St. Lawrence 8-1. Bjork and Gibson defeated Zu and Suresky in the B Flight consolation 8-5 but fell in the next round to Laurel Salladay and Allison Vizgatis of Ithaca in the next round (8-5). It’s good to see all these local players competing in college.
Christine Cary played her high school tennis at Ravena, Sara Bjork played at Saratoga. Alex Goodman was an Emma Willard student, while Terumi Greene played for Shenendahowa. Amanda Rosati played for Holy Names. We will do more updates in the future.
