Great Britain won the Junior Davis Cup tournament for the first time after beating Italy in the final in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Coached by Greg Rusedski, the team of Evan Hoyt, Kyle Edmund and Luke Bambridge justified their top seeding in the event.

Hoyt and Edmund both won their singles matches on Sunday against the Italians to claim the title.

In 2009 Britain reached the final but lost to Australia.

Edmund said after sealing victory: “It’s great to win and be world champions. As a team we played really well all trip and it showed today.”

Rusedski added: “I’m very proud of our team. It feels great to be the first British team ever to win the Junior Davis Cup.”

In their group matches Britain beat both Thailand and Germany 3-0, then defeated Canada 2-1 to top the standings. They went on to beat France 3-0 in the semi-finals before sealing the title against Italy.

In the final Hoyt beat Stefano Napolitano 6-4 6-3 and Edmund followed up with a 6-3 6-4 win against Gianluigi Quinzi. The final doubles rubber was not played.

Britain’s Junior Fed Cup team of Katy Dunne, Pippa Horn and Beth Askew finished in 14th place after losing to Romania 2-1 in their final match.
