Skidmore Men’s Tennis recently played host to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association‘s (ITA) Regional Championships.  The event was held September 30th – October 2nd.  Skidmore’s Luke Granger was the #3 seed.  He beat Brad Keeling of SUNY Purchase in the first round 6-1, 6-0.  In the second round he beat NYU‘s Daniel Penaranda 6-3, 6-2.  Then he won over Ron Smego of Drew 6-3, 6-3  but lost to teammate Miles Ransom 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.  Ransom lost in the semi finals to Yevgeny Perepelov of Hunter College – the #2 seed – by a score of 6-0, 7-6 (1).  Ransom got that far by beating Shota Tasaki of Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens) 6-4, 6-3.  Before that he beat Jose Pinto of Manhattanville 6-4, 6-0 and Sam Deluccia of Hobart 6-1, 6-1.  Jimmy Sherpa of Skidmore beat Andrew Libin of Hamilton in the first round 6-2, 6-4 and Neil Weaver of Stevens 6-0, 6-2.  He then beat T.J. Riley of the College of New Jersey (TCNJ)  6-4, 3-6, 10-2. He ended uposing to Harveer Bhalla of NYU 6-3, 7-5.   Alec Hoblitzell of Skidmore started out with a win over Hobart’s Mike Fields 6-1, 6-4 and a win over 4th seed Chris Rosensteel of Stevens 6-2, 6-1.  He also  lost to Harveer Bhalal of NYU 6-1, 6-2.

The big local college tennis story of the tournament was Skidmore’s Oliver Loutsenko.  Oliver was block seeded 5-8 (the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th seeds are considered the same for seeding purposes).  Oliver started out with a win against Greg Jacob of Mount Saint Mary’s (MSMC) by a score of 6-1, 6-0.  Next was a win over Cruz (TCNJ) 6-3, 6-3, followed by a win over MYU’s Steven Wu 7-6 (9), 6-2.  Then, on to top seed Andrew Guzik who Oliver beat 6-3, 6-1.  In the semi finals, Oliver avenged teammate Jimmy Sherpa’s loss to Harveer Bhalla 7-6 (0), 6-4.  He finally lost in the finals to Perepelov but put up a good fight.  The final score was 6-4, 7-6 (4).  I am not surprised to see Oliver do well, having seen him many times in the juniors and having coached him at zonals.
