Local Junior Tournament Players at Local Tournaments

During the month of October, Northern Regional players have had plenty of opportunities to play tennis tournaments without leaving the region.  Since our October 7th update there have been two junior tournaments and an adult tournament.  Here’s how Northern Regional players fared at these events.

We start with the Indian Summer tournament at Sportime – Schenectady.  The Indian Summer tournament was a Level 2 Open held over Columbus Day Weekend (October 7-10).  The Boys 10 and Unders was won by top seed Aidan O’Brien.  He beat Evan Wagle in the finals 6-0, 6-2. Elijah Poritzky won the consolation round.  Not to be outdone, the 12’s was won by brother Connors O’Brien.  Connors, the second seed, took out top seeded Pierce Snyder in the finals.  Jonathan Frutschy and Suraj Suresh were preliminary round winners.  Alexander Demoly won the Consolations.  In the 14 and Unders Jason Tang, the top seed, survived a 5-7, 6-3, 14-12 battle with Michael Zhu in the semi finals and went on to beat unseeded Ziqing (Bill) Dong 6-3, 6-1.  Bill beat Albert Leein the second round and second seeded Jack DeRizzo in the first round.  DeRizzo won his first round match in the consolation round but lost to Ritwik Mishra in the consolation finals.  Guilderlands Alex Fedorov took the Boys 16 and Unders.  Fedorov – the #2 seed – beat Alexander Ojugbell in the finals 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.  Nick Lau beat fellow Niskayuna teammate and top seeded Russell Santos 6-2, 6-4 in the first round, but lost 6-2, 6-2 to Ojugbell.  Peter Campito also won his first round match.  Russell Santos won the consolation round by defeating Shawn Bissonette 6-1, 6-1.  The final Boys draw was the 18 and Unders.  Erwin Lin beat Matt Bunch in the finals 6-1, 7-5, Jonathan Finn won the consolation draw.  Both Lin and Finn play varsity tennis for Niskayuna.

The Girls 10 and Under draw was packed with 9 players.  Christine Lee won the preliminary round match – she also won her next round and semi final round match to get to the finals.  Other first round winners were Elizabeth Siebeneck, Elise Wagle and Julia Laurilliard.  In the semi finals, Lee beat Siebeneck and Laurilliard beat Wagle.  The finals saw top seeded Juiia Laurilliard beat Christine Lee 6-0, 6-0.  Hannah Scali won the consolation round.  The only other girls draw was the Girls 14 and Unders where #2 seed Mia DiCaprio beat #1 seed Lesley Santos  6-3, 6-4 in the finals.  Christina Lau won the consolation.  Santos and Lau had an exciting first round match which Lesley won 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.

The other junior tournament, was the Challenger at Turning Stone Casino.  The Boys 14 and Unders was played as a round robin with Michael Haelen winning both of his matches and Jon-Robert Corasanti winning his second match.     In the Boys 16’s, Peter Campito won his first round match but lost to Kenneth Friedman of Manlius in the finals.  Rob Schmitz took the 18 and Under Boys finals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Thomas Manning.  Jordan General beat fellow Northern Region player Madeline Locke 6-1, 6-0 in the Girls 16’s,  but lost in the finals to Sienna Susko of the Western Region.

Some local juniors opted to play in the Columbus Day Weekend Adult tournament at Tri City.  Emerson Kelby ran into top seed and Tournament Director Andy Schechter in the first round.  Andy won 6-3, 7-6 (4).  Rob Schmitz played Tom Reifenheiser in the first round.  Tom won 7-5, 6-1.  In the doubles, Kelby and Schmitz took out Paul Warren and  Joe Nocera in the first round 6-3, 6-4 but lost to Tom Bain and Sherwin So in the next round.  Bain and So were the #2 seeds and they went on to wi

n the tournament.  In the Mixed Doubles, Nicole Kellogg and Connor Ameres defeated Dana and Jenny Irwin 6-2, 5-7, 6-0.
