There was a lot of great tennis this afternoon at Sportime – Schenectady. The Girls High School Tennis semi finals were played today at 2:00 pm. Many of these players were just back from playing Junior Team Tennis Nationals in Arizona so they had to be tired. I will have more on that event in a later post but I have to note Cat Crummey’s win over Brooke Hughes of Texas. Brooke is a senior, who has been recruited by Oregon and is ranked #64 in the country – a 5 star recruit. Congratulations to Cat on this impressive win.
In today’s mathcup, Cat Crummey (#1 seed from Shaker) played Claire Schmitz (#4 seed from Emma Willard) and came through with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Just yesterday, these players were playing together at Nationals. It was an exciting match that lasted almost 2 hours with long rallies from the baseline and both players being forced to hit balls that kicked up high to their shoulders. The longest match of the day was between Gaby Peda – the #2 seed from Guilderland and Catherine Jenkins of Shaker (#3 seed). It was a real see saw battle with Jenkins winning the first set 6-0 and Peda winning the second set 6-1. The third set went back and forth and finally ended in a tiebreaker. Two and a quarter hours after it started, Gaby came away with an 0-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) victory.
Doubles finals will be an all Emma Willard event. Chassidy King and Keishora Armstrong beat Emily Laurillard and Ann Phillips 6-1, 6-1 of Niskayuna but the match was closer than the scores indicated. Mitali Das and Molly Goodman won the other semi final over Molly O’Connor and Mia Fallati of Shaker. The score was 6-3, 6-1 but again, the scores were deceptive. The matches were both more than 1 1/2 hours long.
Tomorrow, the winners will play for the sectional championships and the losers will play the 3/4 playoff to determine the last player/team to go to states. Sates will be this weekend at Eastide in Manlius – just outside of Syracuse. States start on Saturday, the seeding meeting is Friday night.
