Girls States – Sunday Update

Cathryn (Cat) Crummey of Shaker and Claire Minnoe of Auburn (just outside of Syracuse) will meet in the 3rd place playoff match at states.  These two are no strangers, however the venue for this rivalry is new.  For the past two years Cat and Claire have met in the finals of the Queensbury Level 1 Tournament.  This year Claire won 6-1, 6-1, last year Cat won 7-5, 6-1.  They were slated to play doubles together this year but there were no other doubles teams in the Girls 18’s.  Call this one the rubber match.  Cat made it this far by beating Tami Comins of Pittsford Mendon in the first round 6-1, 6-2.  Tami is ranked 47th in the Girls 14’s in the Eastern Section of the USTA, Cat is 47th in the Girls 18’s, while Claire is 36th.  In the second round, Cat took out Half Hollow Hills East’s Zenat Roshizada by a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.  The next round was a win against Amanda Austi of Bronxville.  Amanda is 54th in the Girls 18’s.  Cat won 6-2, 7-6(4).  In the semi finals Morgan Herman – #19 in the Eastern Section in the Girls 14’s – prevailed over Cat with a heartbreaking 7-6(7), 0-6, 7-6(4) win.  Morgan had beaten Emma’s Claire Schmitz in the second round 6-3, 6-2.  Claire Schmitz started out with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Meghan DioGuardi of Alfred-Almond.  Claire is 34th in the 16 and Unders.  The other local singles player, Gabriela Peda of Guilderland, lost to Taylor Gurda of Minisink Valley. Taylor is 213 in the Girls 18’s and Gaby is 266th.  In the backdraw Gaby lost to Olivia Messineo 8-4.  Olivia is 39th in the 16’s.

 In the girls doubles, Emma Willard’s Chassidy King and Keishorea Armstrong are also playing the 3rd place playoff match.  They face off against Alex Goldberg and Tomo Iwaski of Edgemont HS.  Goldberg is ranked 200 in the Girls 16’s, Iwaski is ranked 93rd.  King and Armstrong got there by beating Allsion Theberge and and Samantha Heyn of West Genesee 6-3, 6-1, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 win over Charlotte and Alexandria Federwicz of Vestal.  In the second meeting in as many weeks with teammates Mitali Das and Molly Goodman, King and Armstrong came out on top 6-3, 6-1.  In the semi finals, Cassidy and Jessica Cruz won 7-5, 6-3.  Cassidy is 60th in the Girls 16’s and Jessica is 77th.  Jessica is still in the 14 and unders where she is ranked 16th in the Eastern Section and 230th in the nation.    Das and Goodman got to the quarter finals by beating Brockport’s Shanie and Skye Jeanat 6-3, 6-0.  In the first round they took out Alex Rowen and Emma Manuel of Williamsville East 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.  Rowen and Manuel went on to win the backdraw.  The other local team was Emily Laurilliard and Ann Phillips.  They lost in the first round to  Karli and Hayley Hollins of Orchard Park by a score of 6-1, 6-2.  In the backdraw they beat Ishaka and Anika Kumbhakar of Vestal and won 8-3.  Next up was Brittany Burke and Marisa Cameron of Garden City who they beat 8-4.  Their run ended with an 8-4 loss to Hannah Rasmussen and  Elizabeth Sauer.

Although she is not from Section 2, Julia Guignard of Lowville is another Northern Region player who played at states.  Julia beat Susquehanna Valley’s Allison Starke  6-2, 6-1. Allison’s dad Michael, owns the Binghamton Racquet Center where many our juniors play tournaments regularly.  Also, many from our area travel to Binghamton to see the Challenger Tournament that the Starke’s run.  In the second round, Julia lost to Amanda Austi 6-1, 6-0.
