More on College players from our area – Weatherhead, Kandath, & Kandath


Guilderland‘s Kacie Weatherhead’s fall season at York College in Pennsylvania ended with a loss to Megan Bettwy of Clarion College by a score of 10-5.  In doubles she teamed with Nicole Olsen.  The pair lost to Clarion’s Bettwy and Lauren Rhine 8-5.  York lost the match 6-2.  Weatherhead and her York teammates travel to powerhouse Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia on March 16 for the start of the spring season.    Mary Washington finished the year ranked 20th in the country last year.

Sarah Kandath (Albany Academy for Girls) is having a good start to her college career.  She is playing on a loaded Brown University team.  At the Intercollegiate Athletic Association Eastern Regionals, Sarah started out with a win in the round of 128, over Taysha Blessington of Long Island University, by a score of 7-6 (1), 6-1.  Next was Harvard’s Hideko Tachibana – the #16 seed.  Sarah beat her 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-4.  Tachibana was last year’s Ivy league Rookie of the Year.  Tachibana was a Blue Chip recruit who’s was at one time ranked 8th in the country on the National Recruiting List.  In the Round of 32, Sarah lost to one of the #17 seeds – Jessica Wacnik of Boston College (they used block seeding so there were 16 players co-seeded #17).  Wacnik – a 5 star recruit who was ranked 26th in the nation last year – won the match 6-1, 6-3.  In the doubles, Sarah teamed with Laura Wyle.  The pair lost to Hilary Bartlett and Lindsay Graff of Princeton 8-2. Bartlett and Graff were the #2 seeds.

In the ITA Northwest Regionals, Matt Kandath opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over UC Davis‘ Josh Albert.  In the round of 32, Matt beat Robin Cambier of Oregon 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.  Matt made it to the semi finals by winning over Nick Andrews of California by a score of 6-3, 6-3.  Matt lost his semi final match to teammate Ryan Thatcher 6-2, 6-4.  Thatcher – who ended up winning the tournament – was the #1 seed and is Stanford’s #1 player.  In doubles, Matt and Denis Lin – his regular doubles partner – beat Simon Meske and Mark Shkrebtan of Seattle University 8-5.  Jose Izquierdo and Alex Rovello of Oregon beat Kandath and Lin in the round of 16 (8-6).
