Current USTA Eastern Rankings – Men’s Open

Something old and something new.  The current Eastern Men’s Open rankings feature some of the Northern Region’s veteran players as well as some of area’s best high school and college players.

We start out right in the middle with 28 year old, Jonathan Clair.  Jon played his college tennis at Mary Washington in Virginia where he was ranked as high as #15 in the  Region – NCAA Division 3.  Jon is followed by 2010 High School Sectional Champion Ryan Schmitz (currently playing his college tennis at Stony Brook) and Tri City pro Andy Schechter – ranked 45 and 47 respectively.  Chris Frost comes in at #55.  Chris is the 2011 Sectional Champion and is currently playing college tennis at Middlebury College.  Veteran player David Lencewicz of Albany is ranked 64th, while another former Section 2 champion – Mark Piro is ranked 74th.  Thomas Reifenheiser of Argyle.  Tom is a two time Champion in the New England Prep School League and was ranked #2 in the nation (D3) in 1994 when he played for Wesleyan College.

The Regional rankings feature two Falla‘s.  Father Jorge (Age 50) is ranked 155 and son Sebastian is ranked 116.  The other son – Alejandro is ranked 74th, but that’s 74 in the world.  Alejandro plays on the ATP circuit.  We have written about him several times on this blog.  Jorge and Sebastian both got their rankings while only playing two tournaments.  They certainly would be ranked higher if they played more.  Jorge has a straight set win over Jon Clair and Sebastian lost in three sets to Jon.  Jon would also be ranked higher, having played only 4 tournaments (your top 6 results count).  For example, Jon is just two points behind the #12 player, who played 23 tournaments so his points come from the best 6 while Jon’s come from only 4.

John Taft – 120th in the Section – played his college tennis at SUNY Oneonta and played #1 at Glens Falls High School.  Siena’s #1 Michael Amico is taking sometime off from college tennis is 128th.  Michael finished last year ranked 10th in the Eastern Section in the Men’s Open. Nicholas Scammacca of Waterford is #155, while Scotia’s Emilio Yourno is 163rd.  Connor Doud – Ballston Spa‘s #2 player is 174, Juan Bitanga of Albany is 178th.  A pair of Country Club Pro’s are tied at 186th – Greg Roman (Colonie Country Club) and Bill Brahler (Saratoga Golf & Polo Club / saratoga YMCA).  Green Island’s Eric O’Hearn comes in at #210.

Look for a new article soon on the Women’s rankings as well as articles on the doubles rankings and the age group rankings.
