Junior Update, 10’s and 12’s

It’s been a while since we did an update on Northern Region Junior tennis tournament players – November 26th to be precise.  We are going to do separate updates by age group. It’s a good place to start, since we have done year end rankings reports on these two age groups.  In the next week or two we will look at year end rankings in the other age groups and updated tournament results.

Ronan Jachuck has been busy playing mostly 12 and Under Tournaments.  Ronan is the #1 player in the 10 and Unders but his ranking there is pretty secure, so he is working on his ranking in the older age group.  His first post Thanksgiving tournament was at Mountain Lakes in New Jersey (12’s) where he got to the quarter finals of a Level 1 tourament before losing to Michael Medvedev in the tiebreaker third set 10-6 (Ronan would beat Michael next time they meet – see below).  In the first two rounds he beat Damien Ruparel 6-3, 6-2 and Arnold Jia 6-0, 6-1.  The next tournament was at the Hardscrabble Club in Brewster, NY on the same indoor clay courts where Ronan sometimes trains.  He had wins over John T. Warner 6-0, 6-0; Ben Powis 4-6, 6-2, 10-2; and Hayden Cassone 6-3, 6-2.  In the finals Ronan lost to Ronald Hohmann 6-0, 7-5.  Ronan and Ronald partnered in doubles for the Deer Park Sectional Chamoionships in the beginning of January.  They won a round against Nicholas Demaria and Oliver Jevtovic 8-3 then lost 8-2 to Luke Smith and Patrick Maloney.  Ronan made the Main Draw at that tournament and started out with a first round loss to #95 Daniel Pellerito 6-2, 6-2.  He then went on to win backdraw matches against Max Prohorov (6-0, 6-2) and Michael Medvedev (6-4, 6-2) before losing to Steven Sun 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.

The other 12 and Under player who competes regularly in tournaments out of the area is Max Benson.  Max also played the Hardscrabble Club tournament and he also lost to Hohmann 2-6, 7-6(4), 10-7.  That was in the quarter finals.  In the previous rounds he beat Jack Barker  6-1, 7-6(1) and Spencer Lowitz 6-3, 6-2.  In the Tri City Christmas Tournament Max played doubles with Alex Fedorov in the 16’s.  They beat Nick Lau and Russell Santos in the finals 6-2, 6-1.  He played 14’s in the singles and beat Anthony O’Connell in the finals (7-5, 4-6, 6-4).  At the Deer Park, Max beat Steven Nazaroff – the 11th ranked player in the Eastern Section – in the first round (6-2, 7-5).  In the second round, he beat Daniel Meister (6-0, 6-0).  Then a win over 19th ranked Billy Suarez 6-4, 6-1 before falling to his doubles partner, Satish Kumar 6-4, 6-4.  In the backdraw he lost to James Wei 6-4, 6-0.  Wei is ranked #2 in the Eastern Section.  Benson and Kumar beat Aleksa Pljakic and Joseph Wilkanowski 8-2.  In the finals they lost to Jeffrey Gorilovsky and Gary Fishkin 8-4.
