RPI Men’s Update

RPI‘s Mens team sits at 6-6 for the year.  The Spring Liberty League season started with a 9-0 loss to Vassar College.  Vassar is ranked 29th in Division 3 so it was not a bad loss.  #2 Brandon Mazzara was the only player to win a set.  The loss puts RPI at 1-1 in league play, having previously beaten Union College 8-1.  Their first match up of the Spring season was against he Mules of Colby College.  Colby is in Waterville, Maine.  The Mules are currently 6-2 on the year.  Both Colby and RPI traveled to Orlando, Florida for the Spring Break.  RPI played 5 matches in 5 days.  The Spring Break trips are always a highlight of the college tennis season.  The resorts line up numerous college tennis teams at the same location.  It started with a 5-4 win over the University of Wisconsin – LaCrosse Eagles.  RPI took two of the tree doubles and split the singles.  Brandon Mazzara, Will Dickie and Andre Vorbrodt won for the Engineers.   That was followed by a 9-0 win over the Goucher College (Baltimore, Md.) Gophers.  Goucher is winless for the season.  Contrast that to the 12-1 record that Wesleyan University has.  The Wesleyan Cardinals (Middletown, Ct) beat RPI 7-2.  RPI’s only wins were recorded by Will Dickie who teamed with Andre Vorbradt to win the third doubles 8-6 and  took the third singles match 4-6, 6-1, 10-4.  Wesleyan’s 12 wins is just one shy of the school record with 1/2 the season remaining.  A record that is sure to be broken this year.  The next day RPI played Steven’s Institute of Technology (from Hoboken, NJ).  Steven’s – the Ducks – came away with a 6-3 victory.  Jarrett Reigier – #1 singles – was the lone win for RPI in singles.  RPI took 2 out of the 3 doubles matches.  Reigler and Mazzara are 10-5 in doubles.  RPI finished of the week with a 9-0 loss to the Hamilton College Continentals.  RPI returns to action on the 31st with a home match against the Mount Saint Mary’s Knights.  The match will mark the return of Nate Ahlberg (Catskill HS) to the area.  It will also be a reunion for RPI Head Men’s Tennis Coach Jonathan Satkowski and his brother Justin who is the Men’s Head Tennis Coach at Mount Saint Mary’s.
