Junior Team Tennis League Winners Crowned

USTA Eastern - Northern Region (Our Region)

All of the league winners have been crown for the 2011-2012 Northern Region Junior Team Tennis season.  Well, almost all.  There were so many 18B teams this year that we had two divisions – a North Division that was made up of teams from Tri City and Saratoga; a South Division that was made up of teams from Sportime and Capital Region.  The Northern Division was won by the Saratoga Storm who finished with an 11-2 record.  The team features Sarah O’Toole, Keira Walsh, James Barringer, Emily Parrish, Sam Hyatt, Emily Shaver, Luc Cianfarani and JD Towers.  They were actually tied at the end of the season with the Adirondack Aces but the Storm took 2 out of the 3 head to head matches and head to head is the first tiebreaker.  The Aces actually won more sets than the Storm but Storm took the match that counted with both teams having won one time against each other going into their last meeting.  What an exciting finish to a great season.  The Storm will meet the Slicers, winners of the Southern League.  The Slicers finished with a perfect 12-0 record.  Members of the Slicers are: Alyssa Frost, Jimmy Ding, Jay Gu, Lesley Santos, Eunu Song, Salil Chaudhry and Anna Choi.  There is one other league in the Northern Region that plays out of Verona and Utica.  In the 18B’s, the winner of the Verona League plays the winner of the Capital District League for the right to represent the Northern Region at Sectionals.  The Verona league only has the one level (18B’s) so all other Capital District winners will go straight to Sectionals.  The Verona League was won by the Raptors, featuring Samantha Brown, Victoria Pellegrino, Leland Cudney, Ian Yahnke, Colleen Moore, Paul Ziarko, Jessica Flaim, Eric Day and Matthew McCall.

In the 18A’s, the winner was the Junior NY Buzz.  The Buzz powered through the league dropping only 93 games in 10 matches -an average of 9 games a match and they won every set they played. The Junior NY Buzz featured Claire and Rob Schmitz along with Cat Crummey, Emerson Kelby, Josh Jachuck and Rohin Bose.  Along with Claire Schmitz who plays #1 at Emma Willard the Junior NY Buzz has the #2, #3, #4 and #5 players.  Keishorea Armstrong, Chassidy King, Mitali Das and Molly Goodman.  The Junior NY Buzz are repeat champions, having won the league last year and when they made it all the way to nationals.

The 14A’s also had a dominant team.  Soups featured Nisha Detchprohm, Michael Haelen, Chistina Lau, Juaquin Rossen, Lesley Santos, Jason Tang and Michael Zhu.  The Soups are undefeated through their first 8 matches and have only lost a total of 2 sets and 63 games – appx. 8 games per match.

The 14B winner is the Albany Attack.  The Attack are 10-0 with two matches left and the second place team, the Junior Slammers are 8-3 with one match left.   Three times, teams took 3 of the 6 sets, but the Attack were always able to get more games than their opponents, though the Junior Slammers took them all the way to a super tiebreaker for the match.  The players on the roster are: Kaitlyn Dugrenier, Elyssa Connelly, David Kalmer, Matt Jonas, Claudia Alant, Josh Sagaille, Valerie Luttman, Shannon Service, Ronald Shi and Kevin Gu.

The 12 and under league was hard fought with the Capital Region team sitting on top with a 10-1 record.  It came down to to their last match with the second place Smashers where Capital Region took 5 of 6 sets to win the match and win the league.  The Capital Region team is made up of Alex Demoly, Paige Ratsep, Edwin Yang, Gabby Neven, Reeve Churchill, Damian Bruce, Kevin Lin, Shannon Delaney and Zack Huang.

All of these teams will represent the Northern Region at Sectionals with the exception of the 18B league where the winning team is still to be determined.  They must play each other for the right to represent our league in a playoff with the Verona league to see which team gets to go on to Sectionals.  Sectionals will be played at Central Park, Schenectady une 16-17.
