The UAlbany women’s tennis team bounced back from the disappointment of a first round loss in the AmericaEast tournament by handily defeating the Hartford Hawks for the second time in two weeks, this time 4-0.  In team tournament action all unfinished singles and doubles matches are pulled off the court once the clinching point has been won.  So, three singles and one doubles match were stopped, with the Danes leading in all four.  Senior Aubrey Brooks and junior Sarah Iannone were double winners on the day, victorious in both their doubles AND their singles.
The “Dream Team” of Brooks and Iannone got things rolling for the Danes as they won quickly (the theme of the day), 8-1 at #3.  It looked like the #2 team of Cheryl Kukkonen and Kirsten Scott would be next off, but their opponents fought back from a 7-2 deficit to tie it at 7-7.  The Dane duo took the next game, but before they could finish, Rocio Lopez and Livia Gherman polished off the Hawk’s #1 team 8-4 to clinch the doubles point.
Heading into singles it was a race to see who could finish before the match was called off.  Brooks used her savvy, saved time by often not sitting on changeovers and was “first off with the win” in her final match as a Dane…winning a full 10 minutes before the next Dane to finish.  Next off was doubles partner Iannone with the identical 6-1,6-1 score as Brooks.  Capping the scoring for the Danes was freshman Kukkonen who won 6-0,6-0, just ahead of her doubles partner, Scott, who was serving at match point when the match was decided.
At #6, freshman Francine White had staged a comeback to take the first set and led 2-0 in the second when the match was called.  Lopez, playing #1, had a tough opponent in Abby Liu, the talented Texas transfer.  The Dane started slowly and then took charge of the match to take the first set, 6-3, at which point the match was called.
The Danes finished the season in 5th place in the AmericaEast conference, but showed that they are closing the gap with the next group of teams.  Stony Brook, who edged the Danes in the first round, knocked Boston Univ. out of the tournament in the second round and kept them from taking the championship for the first time in seemingly decades.
Stay tuned for more info on this Dane season, team awards, all-conference selections, final individual results, etc.  And info on next year’s squad will be coming out soon, as well.
