LOPEZ and WHITE Win Team Awards; LOPEZ and GHERMAN Named All-Conference

Sophomore Rocio Lopez and freshman Francine White were voted Most Valuable Team Player and Most Improved Player respectively by their teammates.  In addition, Lopez was selected to the AmericaEast All-Conference 1st Team in singles, and 2nd Team in doubles with teammate Livia Gherman.
Lopez led the Great Danes in winning percentage both in singles and doubles.  She was 12-5 in singles, all but two of which were at the #1 position.  She and Gherman finished 15-5 in doubles, all of which were at #1.  The Spanish lefty all-court player had a seven match winning streak, won the clinching match in the Danes’ big win over Army, and led Stony Brook’s Nini Lagvilava 6-2,4-5 in the conference championships when their match was called off.  Lagvilava was voted the AmericaEast Player of the Year.
White made the team through the fall tryouts and showed steady improvement all year long.  Through hard work, putting in extra time outside of practice and being consistently conscientious in her practice focus, White raised her game significantly.  She not only was Most Improved, nearly unanimously, but was a great addition in terms of character as well.  Additionally, in her very first varsity match, White pulled out a big win at #6 singles vs. Marist, and downed Hartford’s #6 in the regular season.
The University at Albany has been playing tennis in the AmericaEast Conference for 10 years.  Up until this season, only two players had ever been selected to any AmericaEast All-Conference tennis team.  This year Lopez and Gherman just doubled that total.  The Danes’ “European Connection” teamed up for a successful season and nearly pulled off a huge win in the first round of the AmericaEast championships as they held four match points vs. Stony Brook’s #1 combo, a team that made 1st Team All-Conference.
