The “Heavy Topspin” blog has come up with an alternative ranking system and applied their rankings to the French Open Men’s Draw to come up with odds for each player making it through the first, second and third rounds and the odds on winning. It is interesting to look at their odds and see the draw progress. Their ranking system takes into account matches from as far back as two years but weights the matches so that more recent matches count more than matches that were played last year or the year before. It also takes into account the surface. Although it was not perfect in predicting results, it does seem to be a good ranking system and it seems to be fairly predictive of results.
