I actually got to see Max Benson play a little at Zonals. His team had the same schedule as my team and often we were in the same place. Max played #5 singles for his team where he won all 5 of his matches at singles and all 3 doubles. As a matter of fact, his closest doubles match was 8-2. The first victim was 226th ranked Sean Attebery (North Wales, Pennsylvania). Max won 6-4, 6-3. Next, there was a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Jonathan Nottingham of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (513th ranked). William Page of Battle Creek, Michigan was basically unranked when Max beat him 6-0, 6-1. Michael Karr of Darien, Connecticut, ranked 561st, was Max’ next victim. Max won that match 6-0, 7-5. Lastly, there was a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over 309th ranked Nicholas Stoiana of Southbury, Connecticut. If you read the previous post you know Max also played in the USTA Regional Tournament in Pittsford, New York where he teamed with Ronan in doubles – they went 1-1. In singles, Max started out with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins. First up was Shawn Berdia of Potomac, Maryland – ranked 530th followed by an unranked player – Thomas Navarro of Williamsville, New York. He lost in the third round to Josh Berman – ranked 220th, from Purchase, New York in a close match 1-6, 7-5, 10-8. If you have been following this blog you know that Josh was one of the players on my Zonals Team. Max finished up with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Gardner Howe from Locust valley, New York. Gardner is ranked 398th. Max started his summer with a National Open where he had a win over 107th ranked Tyler Zink of Lititz, Pennsylvania (6-4, 6-3, 10-4). Max had 2 losses in the tournament -a 6-2, 6-2 loss to 38th ranked Robert Siniakowicz (West Windsor, New Jersey) and a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Jake Fishkin (Baltimore, Maryland).
Claire Schmitz was the only Girl from the Northern Region to represent the Eastern Section at zonals. Claire had 3 wins. Courtney Geiss (659th) 5-7, 6-2, 6-2; Grace Deering (572nd) 6-0, 6-1 and Nicki Neal (669th) 6-4, 5-7, 11-9. Geiss is from Charlseton, South Carolina; Deering is from Charlotte, North Carolina and Neal is from Dacula, Georgia. Her losses were to Josie Rogers of Kingsport, Tennessee (552nd) and Jada Robinson of Reisterstown, Maryland (232nd). The scores were 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2 respectively. Claire went 2-1 in doubles.
