Lots of tennis summer tournament season for the Schmitz family.
Lets start with the youngest tournament player in the family – Claire Schmitz. Claire played 16 National Zone Team Championships recently and collected most of her current National Points there (119 of her 214 National Points are from Zonals). Claire won 3 of her singles – Courtney Geiss (6451st), Grace Deering (564th) and Nikki Neal (660th). Players National Ranking is in parenthesis. Her losses were to Jada Robinson (223rd) and Josie Rogers (543rd). Claire won 2 out of 3 of her doubles matches at Zonals. Claire is 35th in the Girls 18’s in the Eastern Section. Her overall Eastern tournament record is 24-15 – singles and doubles combined.
Older brother Robert J. (Rob) is getting ready to start his college tennis career at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. The Fall tennis season starts right up with the Flower City Tournament in Rochester starting September 8th and the St. Lawrence Invitational September 15th. Rob has been playing junior and adult tournaments this summer and his record for the year – singles and doubles combined is 23-25. In this past weekends L1 tournament at Emma Willard Rob had a win over local rival Rohin Bose and a loss to 3rd seeded Dylan Appel. He teamed with Ernesto Dillon to win the doubles.
The Schenectady County Closed Tournament was an all Schmitz affair. Run by Robert A. Schmitz (Bob) the senior member of the tennis playing family, the doubles final featured a matchup of Rob and Ryan Schmitz against their dad – Tom Schmitz – and his partner Phil Sykes. The boys avenged last years loss by Ryan and Renaldo Riveros in the finals. The score this year was 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 with the last set tiebreaker going to 14-12. Ryan won the singles, losing just 7 games in the three matches he had to play.
Bob Schmitz is currently ranked 30th in the Florida Section in the 75 and overs and 42nd Nationally. He goes into the fall tournament season as the defending champion in the Nyack Classic in the 75 and overs.
All and all, it has been a very full summer of tennis for the Schmitz family with lots of tennis yet to come.
