Way Down Yonder in New Orleans the Van Cotts are playing tennis at Tulane (okay, I’m dating myself with a song from the 60’s – actually it was written in 1922 – MORE HERE). The season started out with the Rice Invitational. The Rice Invitational – Singles is broken down into 4 segments A, B, C and D. Both Van Cotts played in the “C” singles division. Alex lost 6-4, 6-4 to Mitch McDaniels of New Mexico while Ian started out with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Texas Tech’s Jeff Bryan. In doubles, they played the “B” division and woin their first round match by an 8-3 score over Daniel Erbacher and Andrew Maingott of Texas Tech – Corpus Christi. The pair fell in the second round to Mats Hegelund and James Hignett by an 8-1 score. On Day 2 Ian beat Petro Jordao of Texas Tech – Corpus Christi 6-3, 6-2. On Day 3 he lost to McDaniels 6-2, 6-3.
Next up was the ITA Southern Regionals at Auburn. Alex started in the 2nd round of play and beat LSU’s Stefan Szacinski 6-4, 1-1, retired while Ian lost in the same round to Rafael Rondino of Auburn – 6-4, 6-3. In the third round Alex lost to James Chaudry of Mississippi State 6-0, 6-0. Chaudry is ranked 41st in the nation. In doubles Ian played with Takuma Ohashi and lost 8-3 to David Vieyra and Daniil Prosjura of Alabama. The falls season ends with the Alabama Invitational November 2nd-4th.
Hudson Valley Community College went to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championships at the Billy Jean King National Tennis Center starting October 24th. The tournament is an elimination event. Every time a player gets a win it is added to the total for their team. There is a draw for the #1 singles players, a draw for the #2 singles players, etc. The doubles is the same way. For HVCC that meant they got 2 points on Day 1 for Emily Qua’s two wins and 2 points for Haley Knights two wins. They also got 3 points on wins by the first doubles team of Haley Knight & Emily Qua and two points for the wins of Elizabeth Batchelder and Janel Weaver – 3rd doubles.
On Day 2 Emily beat Eva Szyszko of Mercer 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 before losing to top seeded Kate Mospanova of Kingborough College 6-4, 6-2. Haley beat Alina Vitukhnovskaya of Mercer 7-5, 6-0, but fell to Jessica McHugh of Fashion Institute 7-5, 6-2. Sarah Nuss odropped her #5 singles match to Seneca Cornelius of Suffolk CC 6-4, 6-2. Nicole Cassidy lost at #6 singles to Marissa DiCamillo 6-3, 7-5 and 8-1 to Vanessa Salazar of Rock City Community College 8-1 in the consolation round. In the doubles Knight and Qua took out Fashion Institute’s Sara Julio-Prado and Niki Phillips 8-3, then #3 seeds Kahramonova Shahnoza and Kate Mospanova 8-3 then lost to Emily Denney and Ali Krowiak of Broom County Community College (6-2, 6-2). Nicole Cassidy and Rita Thompkins played #2 doubles for HVCC and received a first round bye then they had to play top seeded Terra McHenry and Tori Yeach of Glouchester. McHenry and Yeach won 8-0. In the backdraw they had a walkover win over Kit Brook and Krystal Gatling of Kingsborough CC. Thethird doubles team of Elizabeth Batchelder and Janal Weaver beat Tatyana Gavrylenko and Mehribold Kahramonova of Kingsborough CC 8-0 then lost to Kelly Stanton and Jessica Barney of Glouchester 8-3. Stanton and Barney were the top seeds in the 3rd doubles bracket. Overall HVCC finished 7th out of 13 teams in the event. The overall winner was Glouchester.
