2012 Mid September Local College Tennis Round up – Part 1


Sage College started the season strong with five straight wins before losing two matches – first to Bard, then to Plattsburgh State.  The season started off with a pair of 6-3 wins against Johnson State and Bay Path.  The first away match was an 8-1 win over Yeshiva at the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, NJ.  That match was also their league opener and so far their only league match.  Player highlights include #1 Kirsten Ackerman  (Guilderland) is 6-0 in singles and 5-2 in doubles so far this season.  Isabella Pericone of Burnt Hills is unbeaten at #3 singles with a perfect 7-0 record.  In doubles, she teamed with Mackenzie Riley – Albany High School – for a 5-2 record.  Pericone and Riley are the #1 doubles team.  Mackenzie also has a perfect 7-0 record at #2 singles.  The next home match for Sage Women is 1:00 on September 29th when they host Farmingdale at the Prospect Park tennis courts.

RPI Mens tennis played the Flower City Tournament earlier this month.  We wrote about that tournament previously.    RPI plays Union College on Sunday at 1:00 pm at the Sharp Courts.  RPI Women have a 9-0 win over Hartwick and a 8-1 win over Plattsburgh.  Jessica Buckley  – Notre Dame of Utica –  teamed with Katrina Bohnhorst  for an 8-1 doubles win in the Hartwick match.  Emily Laurilliard played #4 singles against Hartwick and won 6-1, 6-0.  In doubles she teamed with Casey Olsen for an 8-2 win.  Against Plattsburgh they won 8-5 while Emily won her singles match 6-0, 6-0.

On Monday, the Liberty League recognized six Skidmore College student-athletes for their performances during the past week.

Men’s tennis swept the weekly awards as Alec Hoblitzell earned Performer of the Week and Kit Green-Sanderson was named Rookie of the Week.  Hoblitzell won the B singles flight at the Middlebury Invitational, defeating Musyoka Mbithi of Trinity in the final 7-6(2), 6-2.  Green-Sanderson won the D singles flight and also reached the finals of the B doubles flight with teammate Nick Tong.  The Thoroughbreds return to action on Saturday at Trinity (CT)al.

Middlebury, Vt. – The Skidmore College men’s tennis team opened its fall season with a strong showing at the Middlebury Invitational.

Sophomore Alec Hoblitzell and freshman Kit Green-Sanderson won their respective flights, while other Thoroughbreds put together strong performances in singles and doubles action.

Hoblitzell won the B singles flight, defeating Musyoka Mbithi of Trinity 7-6 (2), 6-2 in the finals.  He didn’t drop a set in the flight as he defeated Peter Yanofsky of Bates, Ford Traff of Trinity and Andrew Lutz of Tufts on his way to the victory.

Green-Sanderson won D singles flight, defeating Matthew Zuckerman of Brandeis, Dave Myers of Trinity and Christian Phelps of Vassar before earning a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Trinity’s Cam Smith in the final.

In the doubles B flight, Nick Tong and Green-Sanderson reached the final before falling to Henry Lee and Pierre Planche 8-4.

Liberty League Website / Get RPI Athletics Text Message UpdatesTROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners for the period ending September 9 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Anthony Kim has been selected as the Men’s Tennis Rookie of the Week.

A native of San Diego, Calif., Kim saw his first collegiate action over the weekend and posted a 3-0 singles record and a 2-1 doubles mark in the season-opening Flower City Tournament in Rochester. He played third singles and second doubles in each match, helping RPI to a 2-1 record.

Kim opened with a 6-3, 6-3 singles win and an 8-6 doubles loss to St. Lawrence University before winning his last four matches, including a 6-2, 6-2 victory in singles and an 8-2 triumph in doubles against Nazareth College. He was also 2-0 against Ithaca College as the Engineers finished in fifth place as a team.

A graduate of Torrey Pines High School, Kim played singles and doubles for four years in high school. He captained the team as a senior when his doubles team finished fourth in the Palomar League. Individually, he was ranked in Southern California as a 16-year old and as an 18-year old.

A computer science major at Rensselaer, he was a National Honor Society inductee, selected to the Principal’s Honor Court, an AP Scholar with Merit and a Boy Scout of America Life Scout while in high school.

The Engineers are idle until September 23 when they host Union College at Sharp Courts beginning at 1pm.

More Local College Updates


Sage College’s Gators Mens Tennis Team played indoors today at Capital Region against the Bard College Raptors.  It was the Home opener for Sage.  Bard won the match 9-0.  Sage is now 0-4 on the year.  The next match is Saturday at 1:00 at Prospect Park – Troy (weather permitting).  If there is rain, the match will be played at Capital Region.

The St. Rose Women’s Tennis Team is 4-4 on the year for new Coach Paul Caron.  The season started with a 9-0 win at home over American International.  Then, on to Southern new Hampshire where the team suffered a 9-0 loss.  Next, the team traveled to Pleasantville, NY for a 6-3 win over Pace College.  Finally, they came home to play Stonehill who they lost to 9-0.  Next match for St. Rose is Assumption at home on Sunday at Noon.

Sage netters make it three in a row with win over NYU-Poly

Staten Island, NY—The Sage Colleges women’s tennis team travelled downstate and faced Skyline Conference foes, NYU-Poly on Sunday afternoon. The match was held at the College of Staten Island and saw the Gators tally a 7-2 win, their third straight. Sage is now 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the Skyline Conference, while NYU-Poly drops to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

Sage’s junior Isabella Pericone (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills) suffered her first Skyline singles loss as she dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Ariel Zeig. Pericone leads Sage’s singles performers with a 5-3 record.

Gator junior Danielle Sidoti (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) added a pair of wins as she was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at second singles and teamed at No. 1 doubles with Pericone for an 8-4 win.

Senior Briana Bixler (Highland, NY/Highland) added two wins on Sunday as she defeated her opponent at third singles and teamed at No. 2 doubles with junior Teresa DiNovo (Albany, NY/Colonie) for a victory.

A busy week awaits the Gators matches at Union and Western New England, while closing the week hosting defending league champions, Mt. St. Mary College starting at 4 p.m. on October 7 and Farmingdale State on October 8 at 1 p.m.

Sidoti provides a spark in Gator loss

Troy, NY—The Sage Colleges hosted defending Skyline Conference champion, Mt. St. Mary College in Friday afternoon at Prospect Park. The Knights collected an 8-1 win to improve to 5-1 and 2-0 in the Skyline Conference. Sage falls to 4-6 overall with a 2-1 conference record.

Sage’s junior Danielle Sidoti (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) was a winner at No. 2 singles as she took the first set, 6-3 and then her opponent was retired with Sidoti leading 2-1 in the second set over Jaime Lubniewski. Sidoti, this week’s Skyline Conference women’s tennis player of the week, improves to 6-3 in singles action to lead the Gators.

Gators hang tough in match against FSC

Troy, NY—The Sage Colleges hosted Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State College on Saturday afternoon at Prospect Park. The Rams posted a 7-2 win to improve to 7-1 and 3-0 in the Skyline Conference. Sage falls to 4-7 overall with a 2-2 conference record.

FSC led 2-1 after doubles play as the Gator tandem of sophomore Mary Kate Hayward (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) and freshman Amy Delaney (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) recorded an 8-4 win over the Rams’ junior Rachel Tomasulo (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) and freshman Amanda Veccio (Shirley, NY/William Floyd).

Breaking up Farmingdale’s singles wins was junior Christina Kroder (Catskil, NY/Catskill) as she beat Veccio, 7-5, 6-4 at fifth singles. FSC’s rookie Jessica Sickles (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) beat Sage’s junior Isabella Pericone (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills) at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2. She teamed at No. doubles with junior Kristina Rossano (Franklin Square, NY/Carey) for an 8-5 win over Perricon and junior Danielle Sidoti (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia).

Sage will host Purchase College on October 13 in Prospect Park in a Skyline Conference match commencing at 4 p.m. The Gators will honor their 2011 senior, Briana Bixler (Highland, NY/Highland) in conjunction with Senior Day.

Sage’s Danielle Sidoti named Skyline Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

Troy, NY—Sage’s junior women’s tennis player,Danielle Sidoti (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia)was named the Skyline Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week on Monday for her play last week as the Gators went 2-0 and are now riding a three-match win streak.

Sidoti had a very impressive week, leading her team to wins over MCLA and league foe NYU-Poly. She won 6-0, 6-3 in the first match and 6-0, 6-1 in the latter, while losing only four games in two doubles matches. She is now 5-2 in singles and 3-2 in doubles for the Gators.

“Hi, my name is Danielle Sidoti and I play tennis for Sage College. I was surprised by being named the Skyline Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. I have been playing well lately. Last week, I was 3-0 in #2 singles and 3-0 in #1 doubles. My team has been playing great also. We are 2-0 in the Skyline Conference and 4-5 overall for the year.
