Union College Men’s Tennis opened up the season with a 9-0 win at home against Massachusetts College for Liberal Arts.

The Dutchmen swept three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-0 and yielded just four games in singles play. Union will host SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in its next contest

Union Women’s Tennis also started the season with a 9-0 win.  The Lady Dutchmen traveled to Utica to play Utica College.

UTICA, N.Y. – The Union College women’s tennis team earned a 9-0 sweep at Utica College in its season opening match this afternoon.

The Dutchwomen did not yield a single game in four of the six singles matches and swept all three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-3.

Brittany Gilbert, Andrea Coopersmith, Elise Malkin, Dee Dee Gaudian, Elizabeth Lehmann and Lauren Main earned singles wins. In doubles, Gilbert and Gaudian paired for an 8-1 win, while Malkin and Coopersmith earned an 8-2 win, and Lehmann and Main won 8-0.

Union will host Skidmore next Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 4:30 p.m. at the Union College Tennis Courts.

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College women’s tennis team opened Liberty League play with Skidmore, falling 9-0 in a dual match against the Thoroughbreds at the Union College Tennis Courts.

The Dutchwomen fell to 1-1 on the season while Skidmore improved to 1-0.

It was the first dual match of the season for the Thoroughbreds, while the Dutchwomen fall to 1-1.

Junior Nataly Mendoza won 6-0, 6-0 at number one singles and teamed up with Lee Ford for an 8-0 win at number one doubles.  Ford also won at number two singles, 6-0, 6-2.  At number two doubles, the pair of Molly Nolan and Robyn Baird won 8-0 and at number three doubles, Zoe Valella and Yumi Karlshoej picked up an 8-4 win.

Baird won 6-3, 6-0 at number three singles, while Nolan earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory at number four singles.  Valella was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at number five singles and Karlshoej won 6-1, 6-0 at number six singles.

Skidmore is at William Smith for the ITA Regionals this weekend.

Union will host SUNY Plattsburgh on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in its next dual match.

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Liberty League announced on Monday that men’s tennis sophomore Jimmy Sherpa was named Co-Performer of the Week after a strong showing at the Stony Brook Invitational.
Competing against Division I schools, Sherpa (West Vancouver, B.C.) reached the finals of both the Flight A Singles and Flight A Doubles after defeating the top seed in each bracket.
The Thoroughbreds return to action on September 17 at the Middlebury Invite.
