In October, Djokovic collaborated with his clothing sponsor UNIQLO to develop and launch ‘Clothes for Smiles,’ a new program that aims to give children of all ages a chance for a better future. The program has established a $10 million fund that helps nurture the dreams of children worldwide.

ESPN Magazine tells “How Novack Djokovic Harnessed the Untapped Powers of His Body”

By Eli Saslow | ESPN The Magazine

This story appears in ESPN The Magazine’s July 23, 2012 Body Issue. Subscribe today!

IT’S A COVETED day off in the middle of a tournament that will last two weeks and require him to play more than 20 hours of tennis, and Novak Djokovic is jogging into the Paris heat for his third workout of the day. He has already finished a morning hit-around. He has already stretched, drunk his recovery fluids, visited with a trainer, received a massage, talked about strategy with his coach and performed his yoga. Now comes another 90-minute practice on the red clay of Roland Garros, where Djokovic has arrived in late May with a chance to become the first man in 43 years to win four straight grand slams.

But no sport has advanced in the past decade like men’s tennis, where a rivalry among three once-in-a-generation players has accelerated the game’s evolution. First Roger Federer, then Rafael Nadal, now Djokovic — progression in the form of a battle royal. “It could end up that these are the three best players of all time,” says Chris Evert, who won 18 grand slams. They hit with enough topspin to swing as hard as they want. They defend well enough to retrieve shots that were once certain winners.

Federer / Djokovic Again????

Federer and Djokovic have been placed in the same half of the draw 13 of the past 15 Grand Slams – an occurrence that’s almost statistically impossible. Why is there not more of a suspicion of rigged/fixed draws in the tennis community?

The Right Wing

Another good article from Steve Tignor at Tennis.com.

Here are a few excerpts.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

This morning I could have sworn that I saw a quote from Roger Federer where he referred to early-round losers at the Grand Slams as “the left side of the draw.” I can’t find the line now in the interview he did with Swiss journalist Rene Stauffer, and he probably never said it, but I like the euphemism nonetheless.

If you’ve ever seen a practice session by one of the pros, you know that they pull off shots that they never even try during matches. On the one hand, it’s depressing to see how supernaturally skilled they are; on the other, you also realize that they get tight in matches just like we do. For instance, Andy Murray can often be seen ripping forehands without hesitation when he’s working out, and then playing them much more safely later the same day when he’s out there for real. I was curious to see today whether Murray would try, if he got ahead, to bridge that gap and work on being more aggressive during live points.

All of which, in its way, shows why Nadal is better in the big matches than Murray is: He can up his game in the later rounds. In the Monte Carlo final against Djokovic, Rafa went after all of his shots—serve, forehand, backhand, return—with more conviction and aggression than he did today.

April Fools

Andy Murray at the 2011 Australian Open

This is from the “Tennis Times” blog.  Andy Murray announced he was thinking of skipping the entire clay curt season to concentrate on Wimbledon.  The April 1 timing of the announcement should have been  clue for his followers.

Though Andy can sometimes be seen as “moody” and “grumpy” on court, these times are such a good reminder that he is quite a hilarious personality off court and is considered quite a joker among his fellow players on the ATP Tour.

Andy had this to say at his Announcement, “I spoke with Ivan and it just makes so much sense. At the French, I was looking at a semi at best, especially with Rafa around, so it’s down to me to get a head start on Nole and the others for my home grand slam. Right now, Wimbledon is my number one goal.”

Djoker the Joker

Say what you want about Djokovic – he’s always been great around kids.  Whether it’s his work with UNICEF, or spending time with the ball boys or in this case, the Australian Open Kids Day celebration with Kim Clijsters, he always seems to genuinely enjoy himself and he always seems to want every kid to enjoy himself too.  Get the full story HERE
